Who can apply for a Canada Student Visa?
Foreign students who have applied for and been accepted into a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) may apply for a Canada Student Visa to come to Canada and complete the specific program for which they have been accepted. You must have received an acceptance letter from the designated institution that you plan to attend before you submit your application for a Canada student visa.

The first and most basic requirement to obtain a study permit in Canada is to be accepted into a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. These are Canadian institutions that have been approved by the government to host international students. Study permits are only required for courses of study that are intended to last six months or longer. Any course or program less than six months does not require a study permit. After being accepted to a specific course at a DLI, you can submit your application for a study permit. To do so, you will need:

Working while studying in Canada is one of the major advantages of choosing Canada as your study destination, but there are a few things you should know before you can begin earning.
Most international students in Canada can work for up to 20 hours per week, and full-time during scheduled breaks, without a work permit. Working while studying can help you support yourself and meet new people, all while building the connections and experience that could make you stand out in your job hunt later on.
International students in Canada with a study permit who are enrolled full-time in a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), can work off campus without a work permit. This means you can work for any employer or on-campus in any occupation anywhere in Canada.
Working off campus means working for any employer outside of the university or college. Working on campus means working for any employer on the university or college’s campus, such as working for the university or college itself, for a faculty member (as a research assistant, for example), for yourself (self-employed, working on campus), for a student organization, or for a private contractor providing services on campus, for example, a gym or a restaurant.
Your study permit will state whether you are permitted to work in Canada and the conditions of employment. This statement enables you to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) from Service Canada; obtaining a SIN is a key requirement before you can begin working while studying in Canada.
You cannot work in Canada unless otherwise authorized to do so if your study program is less than six months in duration, or if you are enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) or French as a Second Language (FSL) program. Additionally, visiting or exchange students at a DLI are not permitted to work while studying in Canada.
It’s important to remember that you cannot start working while studying in Canada until you start your study program.
Definition of a Family Member: Family member refers to a spouse, common-law/conjugal partner, and dependent children.
Full-time students with a valid study permit can help their spouse or common-law partner apply for an open work permit. An open work permit will enable the spouse or common-law partner of the international student to work, and is usually valid for the entire length of the student’s study permit.
Canada, and does not require a job offer, or a Labour Market Impact Assessment. Bear in mind, this open work permit may exclude certain occupations (such as jobs in schools or hospitals) unless medical examination is provided.
If you or your spouse or common-law partner is already in Canada, your minor child may study without a study permit at the preschool, primary, or secondary level. Once the child reaches the age of majority in their province, however, he or she must apply for a study permit to continue his or her studies in Canada. This application can be completed from inside Canada. Please consult the table below for further information.
if you are planning to bring your family to Canada while you study, and you’ll be arriving at the same time, you may consider filling out one application for the entire family. If you have a variety of different permit applications (your study permit and your spouse or common-law partner’s work permit, for example) you will need extra documentation and will need to include additional fees (such as the additional fee for the work permit).

Does a child need a study permit?
Children accompanying an adult who is in Canada on a work or study permit may study in Canada without a study permit at the pre-school, primary, and secondary levels.
If you wish to extend or change your conditions while you are in Canada, you will need to complete a separate application. Make sure to check the date of expiry on your study permit and apply at least 30 days before that date if you would like to extend your stay.
